The 'liquid metal look' on cars

The ‘liquid metal look’ is the latest coatings innovation to hit automobiles. This new generation of waterborne basecoat paints is formulated using VDA (vapour deposited aluminium thin flake pigments) which are suspended in an aqueous medium and when sprayed, lay down flat to give a thin mirror-like, high gloss finish.
This unique stunning metallic finish, looks like a bright metal skin and was shown to great effect at the recent Geneva Motor Show on both a Mercedes Benz F800 and a new concept car called, i-flow from Hyundai (photograph © BASF Coatings)
This coatings technology is currently under further development. Will this be available on standard cars in the future or remain as a very special finish only for those who can afford it?

  1. Hopefully, Trevor, we'll see a 'trickle-down' effect to the mass market. Today's Motor Show and Formula One innovations are often tomorrow's mainstream attractions! Mike Beeson @ www.buzzwords.ltd.uk
